A Special Report on Malta in the UAE
Last September 2011, the Khaleej Times newspaper of UAE, published a report on Malta in conjunction with the Malta Enterprise.
The report explored the economy between the two countries and the potential growth in tourism from the Gulf State. A double page spread was dedicated to HEIP School of English. Stephen Adeoye spoke to Khaleej Times about the school and its success story.
This is what he had to say:
You come from a teaching background. How has that helped you in establishing and running HEIP?
Yes, I do. I have been teaching English as a foreign language since 1992. My teaching career started after graduating from the University of Malta with a BA in Psychology and Social Studies.
How do you use technology in teaching and learning?
We use modern ICT, which provides education with tools for sustaining learning communities and associated knowledge management tasks. It also provides tools for student and curriculum management.
Is your school a residential one or do you have day scholars as well? What is the typical strength of a class?
Our school is non-residential. However, students can book accommodation through HEIP School of English. We provide a range of accommodation from low-budget to luxurious hotels, host families and apartments.
What sets HEIP School of English apart from other schools?
HEIP is a small and friendly English language school fully accredited by the Maltese Ministry of Education. We are located in the beautiful village of Mellieha in the North of Malta right on the doorstep of the best beaches on the island, Malta’s sister island of Gozo and the island of Comino — famous for its Blue Lagoon.
What are the additional benefits for students who decide to take up short term courses at HEIP? Do you arrange other activities to keep the students occupied?
Extra curricular activities; leisure activities after classes; additional classes; sightseeing; nightlife and more. We encourage students to practice their language skills in their free time. When courses are over for the day, students are encouraged to check out the scheduled activities. Whether it is a visit to the numerous historic sights of Malta, taking part in dancing and performing arts courses or enjoying some fabulous nightlife, they are always practicing their English language skills.
How do you attract people from industry to teach Business English?
All our teachers are specifically selected not only for their teaching ability and experience but for their diverse knowledge of Business English — which has often been gained through holding senior management positions, in a variety of industries, earlier in their careers. Our teachers hold recognised language teaching qualifications.
